Rajarata University of Sri Lanka

Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL) has initiated a focused programme to strengthen workplace productivity, innovation, and operational efficiency across its administrative and non-academic services. Recognizing that efficient office systems and a productivity-oriented workforce are essential to institutional effectiveness, the University, in collaboration with the National Productivity Secretariat (NPS) and the Center for Quality Assurance (CQA), organized a specialized training programme for administrative staff and Management Assistants.

The programme was designed to move beyond the understanding of productivity as simply “doing more” and to promote a culture of working smarter, improving processes, reducing waste, and continuously seeking innovative solutions. Particular emphasis was placed on identifying inefficiencies in existing administrative processes and exploring practical approaches to improve service delivery, time management, resource utilization, and overall workplace performance.

The training programme was attended by the Director of the Center for Quality Assurance, Professor W.K.D. Keerthirathne, and the Registrar, Ms. S.C. Herath. Ms. S.M.C. Tharanga Senavirathne of the Madavachchiya Divisional Secretariat, under the National Productivity Secretariat, served as the resource person.

A key focus of the programme was to equip staff with practical knowledge and tools to identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation within university office systems. The programme also sought to foster positive attitudes towards productivity, encourage ownership and accountability among staff, and establish a culture of continuous improvement.

Importantly, the training serves as an initial step towards developing the University’s Productivity Promotion Plan for 2027–2031. The insights and improvement opportunities identified through the programme will provide a foundation for developing practical interventions aimed at streamlining administrative procedures, improving service quality, reducing unnecessary delays and duplication, and enhancing the effective use of institutional resources.

Through this initiative, RUSL aims to create a more innovative, efficient, responsive, and productivity-driven administrative environment, supporting the University’s broader commitment to institutional excellence and continuous improvement.
