VIANDS – The Food and Nutrition Day 2019


Third-year second-semester students and the academic staff of Department of Animal and Food Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture organized the “Food and Nutrition Day” to raise the awareness of the people on food nutrition and the health. It was held on 23rd of January 2019 throughout the day at the faculty premises with the participation of the students and both academic and non-academic staff of Faculty of Agriculture. It consisted with many informative events and the events for the entertainment.
The programme was commenced at 7.30 a.m. with a fitness programme guided by physical instructors of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. Two guest lectures were organized on ayurvedic nutrition and ice cream as a desert conducted by Dr. W.H.U.M. Hewapathirana, Department of Ayurveda, North Central Province and Mr. Indika Perera, Deputy General Manager, Cargills Quality Dairies, respectively. There was a quiz competition parallel to the event and two groups of students representing all the batches took part in this quiz competition. Also there was a site to measure the BMI of the participants in the programme.
The evening was very colourful with cricket and Elle matches. Three teams; students, academic and non-academic competed with each other for the cricket and students won the championship after a tough competition. Further, students’ team beat academics by one point in the Elle match. At the end of the day, Dr. A.M.J.B. Adikari, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture delivered a speech highlighting the importance of the programme. Mr. H.P.K.E. Gunarathna, Dept. of Animal and Food Sciences proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of organizers before winding up the nutrition day.
