The Higher Degrees, Research and Publication Committee of the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences (FMAS), Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL), successfully conducted a full-day workshop on “ඔබේ විද්යා දැනුම සැබෑ සමාජ ප්රගමනයට: සන්නිවේදනයට අත්වැලක්” (Effective Science Communication to Public) on 9th October 2026. The workshop was organised in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary celebrations of the faulty and the International Research Symposium of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (ISymRU 2026).
Held at the Faculty premises, the workshop brought together approximately 120 participants, including university academics, medical officers, nursing training officers, Ayurvedic medical officers, public health administrative officers, postgraduate students and undergraduates from diverse fields.
The workshop featured an expert resource panel comprising Mr. Indika Jayarathna, Director of Research, Training and Foreign Relations, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation; Mr. Prasanna Dissanayaka, Assistant Director, Rajarata Sewaya, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation; Mr. Shelton Bandara, District News/Media Officer for Anuradhapura, Department of Government Information; and Mr. Amila Edirimanna, Announcer, City FM, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
Under the theme “Those who share knowledge clearly are true communicators” (දැනුම නිරවුල්ව බෙදාදෙන්නෝ සැබෑ සන්නිවේදකයෝය), interactive sessions explored the use of media and creative communication to make science accessible and engaging, explain scientific concepts in language easily understood by the public, and use science communication to strengthen public relations. A hands-on group activity encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge sharing and the practical application of effective science communication strategies.
The workshop highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between scientific research and public understanding, enabling scientific knowledge to contribute meaningfully to informed decision-making and societal progress.
