The Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences (FMAS), Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, successfully conducted the Inauguration Ceremony for the New Batch of Students of the Academic Year 2025/2026, together with the Dean’s Awards Ceremony, on Thursday, 24 September 2026, at the Auditorium of the Pre-Clinical Building, FMAS.
The ceremony marked the formal welcoming of the new batch of students to the Faculty while also recognising and celebrating the outstanding academic achievements of students through the presentation of the Dean’s Awards.
The occasion was graced by Emeritus Professor S. A. M. Kularatne of the University of Peradeniya as the Chief Guest. Professor P. M. B. Jayathilake, Vice Chancellor of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Dr. P. H. G. Janaka Pushpakumara, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, the Registrar, Deans of other Faculties, the Librarian, Head of the English Language Teaching Unit, Heads of Departments, Professors, academic staff, external Faculty Board members, alumni, academic support and administrative staff, non-academic staff, students, and parents were also present.

The programme commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest and the academic procession, followed by the traditional lighting of the oil lamp and the singing of the National Anthem and University Anthem. The Welcome Address was delivered by the Dean, Dr. P. H. G. Janaka Pushpakumara, followed by an address by the Vice Chancellor, Professor P. M. B. Jayathilake.

Delivering the Chief Guest’s Address, Emeritus Professor S. A. M. Kularatne shared valuable insights and reflections with the new students, offering encouragement and guidance as they begin their academic journey and prepare for their future roles as medical professionals.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Dean’s Awards, which recognised students who had demonstrated outstanding academic performance. The Faculty extends its warm congratulations to all award recipients and acknowledges the encouragement and support provided by their parents and families in their academic achievements.

The programme also featured an Alumni Address by distinguished alumnus Dr. Asela Amarasena. Drawing on his own experiences and reflections, Dr. Amarasena offered words of encouragement and inspiration to the new students as they commence their university education and professional journey.
The President of the Medical Students’ Union also addressed the gathering and extended a warm welcome to the new students, introducing them to the wider Faculty community.

The Faculty expresses its sincere appreciation to the Chief Guest, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Registrar, Deans of other Faculties, distinguished guests, alumni, academic and administrative staff, students, parents, and all other participants whose presence and support contributed to the success of this significant occasion.
The successful conduct of the Inauguration Ceremony and Dean’s Awards Ceremony was a reflection of the collective effort, cooperation, and commitment of the entire FMAS community.
