About the Department
Department of Biochemistry was established as a preclinical department parallel to theestablishment of the Faculty of Medicine on 11thof September 2006. In May 2010, the department was moved to the new 3 storied building from where it was initially established.
The department consists of three laboratories; one student laboratory and two research laboratories together withand an office completed with partitioned rooms, a meeting place and consultation room. The department has a mini library of its own.
The department conducts a Biochemistry undergraduate programme for medical students and post graduate research leading to MPhil degrees. It also conducts special biochemical investigations requested by the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. Currently it provides advise to patients seeking dietary life style management of chronic diseases.
Eight academic staff, one computer application assistant, two technical officers and three laboratory attendants are the human resources of our department.There is an emeritus senior professor of Biochemistry working as the consultant. Apart from the Head and another senior lecturer there are three senior lecturers on study leave, one in Queensland university, Australia and the other two affiliated to the Colombo university.
In order to cover up the vacant posts, pre interns from Rajarata medical faculty and other local medical faculties are temporarily used.
