Faculty of Medicine and Allied sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (FMAS-Rajarata) was established in 2006 as the 7th medical faculty in Sri Lanka. Over time it has evolved to be a prominent medical education provider in the country recruiting the third largest group of medical undergraduate trainees annually.
FMAS Rajarata is well equipped with teaching facilities, laboratories, libraries, skills labs and a state-of-the-art professorial teaching unit established in 2011, attached to Teaching hospital Anuradhapura.
A large sports ground and other sports facilities within the faculty complex, together with an embedded culture of sports promotes physical activities and sports among our graduates.
The faculty maintains a special scholarship program “Saubhagya” to financially support needy students in addition to the government scholarships. This scholarship program ensures that financial constraints do not hinder the academic progress of our undergraduates. This is maintained by the staff of the faculty with the financial assistance of well-wishers and the Alumni. All our students are provided with free hostel facilities, safe drinking water and recreational facilities to make their lives comfortable and enjoyable.
Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital being the 3rd largest hospital in the country and having a large draining area of patients as a tertiary care center in the region ensures an excellent clinical exposure to our undergraduates. Professorial teaching unit is one of the best of its nature in the country. Professorial teaching unit has also contributed to uplift the standards of clinical care in North Central Province by introducing novel practices such as the introduction of Early Warning Scores in ward setup, coordinating the stoke thrombolysis program with neurologists and physicians, and establishing expertise in gynecological laparoscopic surgery.
We have a team of highly qualified academics with 60% of them having MDs or PhDs. we also get the support of visiting lecturers who are highly acclaimed in the profession.
Faculty maintains a strong research culture and some of our academics are well acclaimed for their research excellence. We have been successful in forging several local and international collaborations to research on areas of local and national importance. Chronic Kidney disease, snake bites and toxicology, leptospirosis, tropical diseases, maternal and child health are few such areas we work on. We are also the first medical faculty in the country to establish a center for traditional medicine research.
The faculty has an excellent student research program generating enthusiasm and capacity among the undergraduates, which is evident by the fact that 56 % of the student projects done in year 2019 were selected for presentations at SLMA & CCP conferences. Three of them were presented at APACPH international conference. All these presentations were fully funded by the faculty.
This is an excellent center to experience tropical medicine and we facilitate short training programs/electives for both undergraduate and post graduate foreign students.
Anuradhapura had been the ancient capital of Sri Lanka for 15 centuries (4th century B.C to 11th Century A.D) and is an UNESCO heritage city. It houses the ruins of the world’s oldest hospital.
The serine environment created by the gigantic Buddhist stupas, abundance of lakes, archeological monuments and the lush greenery which surrounds the faculty and professorial teaching unit makes it a different experience of medical education at FMAS Rajarata.
We welcome you all to share the experience.
