Sri Lankan Journal of Agriculture and Ecosystems (SLJAE) publishes peer – reviewed original research articles from all fields of agriculture including crop science, forestry, agricultural biology, plant protection, genetics and plant breeding, food and nutrition, animal science, soil science, water resource management, agricultural machinery, agricultural economics and extension and agricultural system studies and ecosystem research.

Publication frequency

The journal publishes two issues at present and expects to increase its issues to four in due course.

Open Access Policy

All articles in this journal will be immediately and permanently free for everyone to download and read. However, this journal has no open access fee or article processing charge at present.

Sri Lankan Journal of Agriculture and Ecosystems (SLJAE) publishes peer – reviewed original research articles from all fields of agriculture including crop science, forestry, agricultural biology, plant protection, genetics and plant breeding, food and nutrition, animal science, soil science, water resource management, agricultural machinery, agricultural economics and extension and agricultural system studies and ecosystem research. In addition to original articles, the SLJAE publishes comprehensive reviews (invited) on topical subjects that makes a clear theoretical, conceptual or methodological contribution to the existing literature and brief research notes and communication of preliminary results.

Author Guidelines

1. Title Page
The title page should include:
The name(s) of the author(s)
A concise and informative title
The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s)
The e-mail address, and telephone number(s) of the corresponding author
If available, the 16-digit ORCID of the author(s)

Please submit title page as a separate attachment
2. Abstract
Please provide an abstract of 200 to 250 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.
3. Key Words
Maximum 6 key words, italic in alphabetical order
4. Headings
Please use the decimal system of headings with no more than three levels.
5. Abbreviations
Abbreviations should be defined at first mention and used consistently thereafter.
6. Text Formatting
Manuscripts should be submitted in Word.
Regular articles: These papers should not exceed 8000 words (text and references) or about 25 manuscript pages including figures and tables.
Short Communications: They should not occupy more than 2,000 words or about 8 manuscript pages, including figures, tables and references. They will be reviewed in the same way as research papers.
Reviews: These papers should not exceed 10,000 words including figures, tables and references. Divided into main headings INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS AND DISCUSSION, CONCLUSIONS and REFERENCES
• Use a normal, plain font (e.g., 12-point Times Roman) for text.
• 1.5 line spacing with justified alignment for the entire manuscript
• Use italics for local names.
• Use the automatic page numbering function to number the pages.
• Do not use field functions.
• Use tab stops or other commands for indents, not the space bar.
• Use the table function, not spreadsheets, to make tables.
• Use the equation editor or Math Type for equations.
• Save your file in docx format (Word 2007 or higher) or doc format (older Word versions).
7. Scientific Style
• Please always use internationally accepted signs and symbols for units (SI units).
• Nomenclature: Insofar as possible, authors should use systematic names similar to those used by Chemical Abstract Service or IUPAC.
• Genus and species epithet should be in italics. In the first place of reference the author of the name should be given (E.g. Oryza sativa L.), which could be abbreviated in subsequent places (E.g. O. sativa).
• Generic names of drugs and pesticides are preferred; if trade names are used, the generic name should be given at first mention.
• Please use the standard mathematical notation for formulae, symbols, etc.:
• Use italic for single letters that denote mathematical constants, variables, and unknown quantities
• Use roman/upright for numerals, operators, and punctuation, and commonly defined functions or abbreviations, e.g., cos, det, e or exp, lim, log, max, min, sin, tan, d (for derivative)
• Bold for vectors, tensors, and matrices.
8. References
8.1. Citation
Cite references in the text by name and year in parenthesis. Examples:
• It seems to be logical to analyze hydroclimatic variables at a small scale (Rai 2010).
• Abeysingha et al. (2015) reported a significant increasing trend in annual streamflow at an upstream gauging station.
• The hybrid-delta method, on the other hand, considers inter-annual variability for each month (Hamlet et al. 2010; Islam et al. 2012; Tohver et al. 2014).
8.2. Reference list
The list of references should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Unless suitable published literature are not available, personal communications and unpublished works could be mentioned in the text. Do not use footnotes or endnotes as a substitute for a reference list.
Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last names of the first author of each work.
E.g. for Journal article:

Panda D K, Kumar A, Ghosh S, Mohanty R K (2013) Streamflow trends in the Mahanadi River basin (India): linkages to tropical climate variability. J Hydrol 495:135–149.
Book Chapter:

Online documents:
The full URL should be given and the date the reference was accessed. If any other information (Authors name, date, source of publication, DOI) is known, should also be given.
9. Tables
• All tables are to be numbered using Arabic numerals.
• Tables should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order.
• For each table, please supply a table caption (title) explaining the components of the table.
• Identify any previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference at the end of the table caption.
• Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data) and included beneath the table body.
• Embedded the table in an editable form at the required place of the manuscript
10. Illustrations (Figures)
• In text refer the figures as (Fig.1 etc.)
• Position the figure in the text as required in sufficient size and resolution of about 300 dpi

• If there are several related illustrations / figures / photographs or drawings, assemble them into a composite Figure, and label each panel as a, b, c, etc.
• Micrographs and photographs should include clear scale bars. The scale should be defined legibly in legend or figure heading.
• Labelling to describe the units on each axis should be large, parallel to each axis, even-sized, and clear • Use upper- and lower-case lettering, not all capitals, not bold.
• Lines of figures should be thick enough to clear visible at printing.
Plagiarism Policy
SLJAE does not allow any kind of plagiarism, manipulation of data or figure, provide incorrect information consciously and any kind of copyright breach. All the manuscripts will undergo complete plagiarism check before sending for peer reviewing.

Condition for Submission

The language of publication in this journal is English (preferably British English). The manuscript should be written in clear language, which can be understood by those outside the authors’ area of specialization. Only manuscripts, which have not been previously published, and are not currently under consideration for publication by another journal are acceptable. Exceptions may be made in case abstract published in the proceedings of conferences or translated from another language.

The SLJAE does not process manuscripts through the online system at present.

Peer review Process and policies

The primary purpose of the review is to provide the editors with the information needed to reach a decision. The review should also instruct the authors on how they can strengthen their paper to the point where it may be acceptable. As far as possible, reviewer should explain to the authors the weaknesses of their manuscript, so that rejected authors can understand the basis for the decision and see in broad terms what needs to be done to improve the manuscript for publication elsewhere. This is secondary to the other functions, however, and reviewers are not obliged to provide detailed advice to authors of papers that they believe are not suitable for publication.
Instructions to peer reviewers
Editorial Board requests the peer reviewers to ensure the following requirements in a submitted manuscript:
• Research or review paper is well designed and executed.
• Presentation of methods will permit replication.
• Data are unambiguous and properly analyzed.
• Conclusions are supported by data.
• New knowledge is added to the field of study
Reviewer comments and conclusions should be based on an objective and impartial consideration of the facts, exclusive of being bias personally or professionally. All comments by reviewers should be based solely on the paper’s scientific merit, originality, and quality of writing as well as on its relevance to Scope of the journal.
Reviewers are responsible for acting promptly, adhering to the instructions for completing a review, and completing the review within the requested time frame. These guidelines are adapted from the Council of Science Editors White Paper on Promoting Integrity in Scientific Journal Publications.
Reviewer Responsibilities
• Provide written, unbiased feedback on the scholarly merits and scientific value of the work, together with rationale for the opinion.
• Provide the review immediately within 14 days.
• Indicate if the writing is clear, concise, and relevant. Rate the work’s composition, scientific accuracy, originality, and interest to readers.
• Avoid personal comments or criticism.
• Refrain from direct author contact.
• Maintain the confidentiality of the review process by not sharing, discussing with third parties, or disclosing information from the reviewed paper at all.
• Alert the Editor to any potential personal or financial conflict of interest you may have and decline to review when a possibility of a conflict exists.
• Determine scientific merit, originality, and scope of the work and suggest ways to improve it.
• Avoid comments to authors directly on acceptance or rejection of the paper; include such remarks as confidential comments for editors.
• Note any ethical concerns, such as substantial similarity between the reviewed manuscript and any published article or any manuscript concurrently submitted elsewhere.
• Ensure that published articles meet standards of the journal.
• Protect readers from incorrect or flawed research or studies that cannot be validated by others. • Be alert to any failure to cite relevant work by other scientists.
• Strictly follow the reviewer’s report form given by the Coordinating Editor.

Editorial Policies

Manuscripts submitted to the journal are subjected to a preliminary screening based on scope of the journal. Manuscripts which are not according to the scope of the journal and author guidelines will be returned to the corresponding author without further processing. Those manuscripts that are cleared the initial screening then undergo a double-blind peer review process. Two reviewers in the same or related fields are assigned by the Editorial board.
Peer review process normally takes from 04 to 08 weeks. It is assured that the whole process will not take more than 12 weeks. Once the reviewing process is over, the manuscript will be sent to the corresponding author with the reviewers comments and the author will be given a maximum period of 4 weeks to attend the reviewers comments, if the manuscript is accepted.
If there is a disagreement between the reviewers, the manuscript would be sent to a third reviewer as suggested by the Editorial Board. The final decision regarding the acceptance/rejection will be made by the Editorial Board based on the comments of the reviwers.
Once the manuscript is accepted, the abstract will be first displayed online till the full paper is published. DOI will also be taken to the journal in due course.
