Department of Agricultural Engineering and Soil Science conducted a one-day farmer training program related to “Soil Nutrient Management” on 01st of November 2019. This event was funded by UNESCO with the aim of strengthening the partnership between the Faculty of Agriculture, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and the farming community. Eighty two farmers participated in the training program representing Bandara-puliyankulama, Saliyapura, Puwarsankulama, Pahiyankadawela and Eppawala areas.

The objective of this training programme was to educate farmers on soil nutrient deficiencies, imbalances and how to maintain soil health by reducing soil degradation in cropping lands.  The event was officially commenced at 9 a.m. with the welcome speech by Dr. M.G.T.S. Amarasekara. The management of Soil nutrient was explained by himself and Dr. D.M.S. Duminda discussed about the matters related to problem soil. A parallel practical session was conducted regarding the analysis of soil samples in the laboratory and field demonstration.

A question and answer session was held at the end of the programme. A questionnaire was distributed among the farmers to assess the effectiveness of the training programme. A token of appreciation was also offered from every farmer at the end of the training program. The event was coordinated by Dr. M.G.T.S. Amarasekara.
